Drinking Water Products
Welcome to the DWI Regulation 31 section
Protection of public health of consumers through safeguarding the quality of drinking water is a key aspect of the drinking water quality regulatory framework.
Regulation 31 ensures that water suppliers, when producing and distributing drinking water, only use products and substances to that do not cause any detrimental effects on the safety or quality of the drinking water.
These pages explain in more detail the approval system in place, how manufacturers can apply for product approval and some commonly asked questions that you may have on regulation 31 issues. Please note that as from 1 June 2015 we are changing our policy so that any application for approval which has not progressed for six months will be closed and a new application will need to be made.
(Please note that the information on the .GOV.UK website is incorrect. DWI manages the scheme on behalf of the Secretary of State for Defra ,and for the Welsh ministers. Approval is not directly from DWI. The information about WRAS is also incorrect as they do not regulate, they run the advisory scheme).
